The 24 hour restaurants are not busy at 6 in the morning but they still serve the full menu and the whole kit for anyone awake to eat it. I payed a visit to one of these god forsaken venues last night as they were cleaning up, chairs on the tables, half sleeping staff punched out by a table. The service was not bad for the late/early hour and compared to many places here in Tbilisi, including the up-market restaurants it would be considered really good service.

I have been working on the photos for a cook book on Georgian cuisine in one of the fancy restaurants in the old town by the river. The music played in this place has started to give grey hairs and full day head aches, it is really the very least attractive music available here in Georgia. They also follow a scheme where the volume is increased rather than the opposte when more guests arrive. anyhow we have managed to get some pretty fair photos of the lovely Georgian food.

Interested in photography and always with high expectations on myself. I’m comparing the photos I take with the work of magnum photographers, it can kill the motivation on a bad day but now it has boosted my crave to take photos.

I watched a documentary on Araki, the japanese photographer that has teared down every convention and tabu. I can’t really make up my mind on what to think about some of his pictures and I see that as a very good quality. It is not always clear what he wants to say or if there is anything to understand except that the moment has some importance to him for some reason. In any case, it does not leave one undisturbed. I love that.

great inspiration he is anyway, for looking at things in a different way. For sure the debate about the role of women in his pictures is important. It is not possible to overlook the disturbing roles they play. A woman spread out naked on the floor with a watermelon crushed between her legs is difficult to cope with, that is all I can say and that is why it is interesting. It can’t be comprehended.

Realised last night that i had erased a couple of hundred photos from the south east of turkey before backing them up. That hurts. Lesson learned.

…ask for help!

Really, lately the doubts have been sneaking up on me from all over. My back aching, is this really going to work? My photos do not measure up to what I expect from myself, I start doubting the whole idea of photography and the trip as a whole. Sure now I’m comfortably embedded in an Istanbul apartment, but then what? I decided to seek advice, put an end to the doubts and talk it out.

Photography: I send a FB message to Petter Cohen toi ask him to have a look at my photos which he did and then got back to me with a long list of brilliant advices that I now try to understand how to put to practice. He also forwarded some links to some portfolios that had me climbing and stand on top of a peak of motivation. From there on it was just downhill.

I reached rock bottm realising that i will not take photos for Magnum in this life and then whats the point? I was back at square one but now in greater doubt. I started to tell myself that well, maybe I do not have to aim all that high. Just like I don’t not set my aim for cape town, three years ahead, everyday. Rather, maybe, I told myself I can scale it down and first sort out my phoos and see what I can improve. Scale it down a bit, like Eddie Izzard says.

I now aim to understand what I would like to tell with my photos, that is not at all that simple but is is damn interesting to ask. Always ask what is the point of this photo, i can take it, it looks nice but what is the point, thank you for that Simon Morris, good thinking!

Back issues: I talked to one doctor that helps me out when shit hits the fan and he gave me the advice to strech my thighs since the muscles probably are too short pulling me down in a strange posture damaging my back. I feel great now just knowing there is something I can try that might help me get rid of this pain.

Trip as a whole: Reading the extracts of Alastair Humphreys book from his travels that are available online I got the feeling that I was not alone. Strangely enough, just knowing someone else has gone through the same doubts makes me stronger!

Big thanks to cykloteket for all your advice and for sending me a new pair of Marathon tires, they will come in real handy now!

all back on track again!
